Currently, there are efforts in Switzerland to introduce compost burial as an additional and environmentally friendly burial option. In this type of burial, the nutrients of the body are preserved and made available to the plant world. In this way, the body is transformed into fertile soil.

There are different methods of compost burial: terramation and humusation. Terramation is already legal in several U.S. states. In Germany, it has been approved for testing in the state of Schleswig-Holstein. Humusation is still in the research phase.

In 2019, the first political initiative on this topic was submitted in Switzerland. Currently, two associations in Switzerland are working to promote research and legalisation of compost burial:

  • The association Werde Erde aims to establish terramation (werde-erde.ch).
  • The association Humusation Suisse advocates for humusation (ch)
